Fred Ferkels

While browsing through my local Cost Plus one day, I happened upon their vast and varied candy section. It always has interesting stuff and on this particularly happy day, my eyes happened upon a bright pink bag with a picture of a pig prominently displayed and the name 'Fred Ferkel.' How could I resist a candy with a name like FRED FREAKING FERKEL?!

fred-bag.jpg They're a German gummy type candy put out by Katjes, the people better known for their licorice products than anything else. I don't like black licorice so this was my first experience with a Katjes confection.

fred-spilled-horiz.jpgThey smell vaguely fruity but since all the text on the bag is in German, I'm not exactly sure what flavor they're supposed to be (though the Katjes website suggests strawberry, raspberry and cherry).

Each piece is about 1" x 1" and as you can see, is a pig's face. They're almost too cute to eat. Almost. They're soft but not squishy and aren't bright and slick like, say, a gummy bear. They've got a real nice chew to them, and again aren't super sticky like some other gummy candies.

It's a soft, pleasant fruity flavor, not obviously
fred-closeup.jpg strawberry, raspberry or cherry but still incredibly addicting. I like to eat each ear first and then gobble up the rest of the face.

The next time you're wandering around Cost Plus, wondering who on Earth would buy a decorative wooden ship, mosey over to the candy section and pick up a bag (or two) of Fred Ferkels!
